APAC Linguistic Technical Program Manager - NLU - Machine Intelligence - Google - Tokyo


Job description
Understanding natural language is at the core of Google's technologies. The Natural Language Understanding (NLU) team in Google Research guides, builds, and innovates methodologies around semantic analysis and representation, syntactic parsing and realization, morphology and lexicon development. Our work directly impacts Conversational Search in Google Now, the Knowledge Graph, and Google Translate, as well as other Machine Intelligence research.
As the APAC Linguistic Technical Program Manager, you will collaborate with Researchers and Engineers in NLU/Machine Intelligence to achieve high quality data that improves our ability to understand and generate natural language systems. To this end, you will also be managing teams of linguists and vendors to derive linguistic databases as well as propose direction for approaches to language specific problems.

Responsibilities
Work closely with Researchers and Engineers on NLP projects. Explore new methods of data gathering for high throughput and high quality data.
Analyze data pipeline and annotator workflow, implementing scheduling to optimize productivity, track key performance metrics across the team, and design quality control methodology, experiments, implementation and improvements.
Recruit, hire and train linguistic experts for short term, high impact projects, and manage and oversee teams of linguists, vendors and/or remote workers in the APAC region.
Drive discussions with vendors and external resources, including recruiting and hiring temporary resources for the APAC region.
Monitor data acquisition and curation, and manage budgets, contracts and payments.

Minimum Qualifications

BS/BA degree or equivalent practical experience.
Experience in managing multiple complex international projects.
2 years experience in NLP research or language-related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

Project Management experience – ability to define projects and execute within timelines with multiple stakeholders, and proven ability to deliver projects on time and to budget.
Experience collaborating internationally with multiple partners on long term and complex projects, and experience managing people and developing projects or curricula from concept to completion.
Demonstrated operations and people management with experience in vendor management and remote people management.
Familiarity with experimental design, research methodologies, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and proficiency with scripting languages, web development, and working in a Linux environment.
Multilingual speaker with knowledge of semantics, syntax, grammar, morphology, and lexicon development for several language families.
Native-level fluency in Japanese, Korean or Chinese, and professional fluency in English.
